The first of two medications used for a medication abortion (commonly known as the "abortion pill"). It has been legal in the US for nearly two decades, and has a safety record of over 99%. It blocks the hormone progesterone, stopping the pregnancy from continuing.

The second of two medications used for a medication abortion. It is taken 24-48 hours after the Mifepristone. It is FDA-approved when used with Mifepristone to end an early pregnancy. It causes the uterus to empty, resulting in an experience similar to a heavy, crampy period or early miscarriage.

These medications have additional uses as well:

Mifepristone is also used for cervical preparation for 2nd trimester abortion, and management of 2nd and 3rd trimester pregnancies when the fetus has died before birth.

Misoprostol is also used for induction of labor, cervical ripening before surgical procedures, the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, and to prevent stomach ulcers.
