Mifepristone

The first of two medications used for a medication abortion (commonly known as the “abortion pill”). It has been legal in the US for nearly two decades, and has a safety record of over 99%. It blocks the hormone progesterone, stopping the pregnancy from continuing.

Misoprostol

The second of two medications used for a medication abortion. It is taken 24-48 hours after the Mifepristone. It is FDA-approved when used with Mifepristone to end an early pregnancy. It causes the uterus to empty, resulting in an experience similar to a heavy, crampy period or early miscarriage.
